The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises is a 2012 superhero film directed by Christopher Nolan and written by Nolan with his brother, Jonathan Nolan. It concludes Nolan’s Batman trilogy following Batman Begins (2005) and The Dark Knight (2008). Christian Bale returns as Bruce Wayne/Batman, alongside Michael Caine as Alfred Pennyworth, Gary Oldman as Commissioner James Gordon, and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox. Warner Bros. released it theatrically in the United States on July 20, 2012. Its story takes place eight years after Harvey Dent’s death and Batman’s disappearance, with Gotham City publicly believing Dent was a hero and Batman a fugitive. Gotham has enjoyed relative peace under the Dent Act, legislation supported by Dent’s public legacy. Bane, a masked revolutionary played by Tom Hardy, arrives in the city and targets the stock exchange, forcing Bruce Wayne to resume the Batman identity. Bane defeats Batman in a fight beneath Wayne Enterprises, breaks his back, and imprisons him in an overseas pit. While Bruce recovers, Bane isolates Gotham by detonating explosives around its bridges and reveals a nuclear fusion device stolen from Wayne Enterprises. He threatens to destroy the city if its residents try to leave or if outside forces intervene. Gotham waits. Anne Hathaway portrays Selina Kyle, a skilled cat burglar initially working for Daggett and later allied with Batman. Marion Cotillard plays Miranda Tate, a Wayne Enterprises executive who helps Bruce pursue a clean-energy project. The film eventually reveals that Miranda is Talia al Ghul, daughter of Ra's al Ghul, the League of Shadows leader portrayed by Liam Neeson in Batman Begins. Joseph Gordon-Levitt appears as Gotham police officer John Blake, who recognizes Bruce's identity and assists the resistance. After escaping the pit, Bruce returns to Gotham, helps its police confront Bane's forces, and learns that Bane has protected Talia’s plan. In the climax, Talia activates the bomb’s countdown, but Selina kills Bane and Batman stops Talia before she can trigger the device remotely. Batman flies the bomb over Gotham Bay in the Bat, a vehicle whose autopilot he had secretly repaired. Gotham believes he dies, and the city erects a memorial to him. The ending shows Alfred seeing Bruce alive in Florence with Selina; Fox discovers the repaired autopilot; and Blake inherits coordinates leading to the Batcave. The production used locations including Pittsburgh, New York, Los Angeles, London, and Jodhpur. It earned more than $1 billion worldwide during theatrical release.
