Elia Kazan’s On the Waterfront, released by Columbia Pictures in 1954, follows Terry Malloy, a prizefighter who works on the docks of Hoboken, New Jersey. The waterfront is controlled by Johnny Friendly, a corrupt union boss whose organization decides who receives work. Casual laborers line up, fearful of challenging him.
The story begins when Terry helps lure Joey Doyle, a dockworker, to a rooftop where Friendly’s men kill him after he considers testifying to a crime commission. Terry did not know the murder was planned yet feels responsible. Joey’s sister, Edie, wants truth while authorities struggle to penetrate waterfront silence.
Edie meets Father Barry, a Roman Catholic priest played by Karl Malden, who abandons his distance from the dockworkers’ problems. Barry’s sermon after Joey’s death, delivered inside the hold of a ship, turns the murder into a moral issue. Barry tells them resistance requires personal sacrifice too.
Terry’s awakening is complicated by his relationship with Edie and brother Charley, Friendly’s lawyer. Charley helped Terry accept a fixed boxing match, ending athletic career. When Terry refuses to keep quiet, Charley is ordered to bring him. Their confrontation in a car produces the film’s “I coulda been a contender” speech.
Brando’s performance makes Terry’s change physical. He begins as a guarded man who uses silence and gestures to survive, then becomes willing to name the corruption around him. The role drew on Method acting associated with Kazan and the Actors Studio, but Brando’s restrained realism made Terry a damaged dockworker.
Kazan shot much of the film on location in Hoboken, using streets, rooftops, alleys, and docks to give the drama a documentary texture. Leonard Bernstein wrote the score, his only original film score, combining orchestral writing with the setting’s industrial atmosphere. Boris Kaufman photographed the movie in black and white.
On the Waterfront premiered in July 1954 and became a success. At the 27th Academy Awards, it won eight Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director for Kazan, Best Actor for Brando, and Best Supporting Actress for Eva Marie Saint. Saint’s Edie was her debut, and she quickly became a performer.
The film’s ending refuses easy victory. Terry testifies against Friendly, is beaten by dockworkers, and returns to the hiring line after Friendly’s arrest. The men acknowledge him when he enters warehouse and calls for work to begin. On the Waterfront ties redemption to action, while preserving realities that made silence powerful.
