Lily Potter, born Lily Evans, is Harry Potter’s mother in J. K. Rowling’s *Harry Potter* novels. She grows up in a non-magical family alongside her older sister, Petunia. Before attending Hogwarts, Lily befriends Severus Snape, a boy from a nearby neighborhood who recognizes that she is a witch and tells her about the magical world. Their friendship survives their sorting into different Hogwarts houses: Lily joins Gryffindor, while Snape joins Slytherin. It ends after Snape calls her a “Mudblood” during a confrontation with James Potter and his friends. Lily refuses to treat the insult as an isolated mistake, pointing to Snape’s growing association with students interested in the Dark Arts.
At Hogwarts, Lily is known for her talent in Potions. Professor Horace Slughorn remembers her fondly and includes her among the students he invites to his Slug Club. She eventually marries James Potter, despite having disliked his arrogant behavior when they were younger. Both become members of the Order of the Phoenix, the organization opposing Lord Voldemort. Their son, Harry, is born on July 31, 1980. A prophecy concerning a child with the power to defeat Voldemort places the family in danger; its description could initially apply to either Harry or Neville Longbottom.
The Potters hide in Godric’s Hollow under the Fidelius Charm, which conceals their location through a Secret-Keeper. They entrust that role to their friend Peter Pettigrew, who betrays them to Voldemort. On October 31, 1981, Voldemort kills James and then approaches Lily and Harry. He gives Lily a chance to move aside, but she refuses to abandon her son. Voldemort kills her; when he tries to kill Harry, the curse rebounds. Lily’s willing sacrifice has given Harry a protection that Voldemort does not understand, leaving the baby alive with a lightning-shaped scar.
Lily’s death continues to shape the series. Harry is raised by Petunia and her husband, Vernon Dursley; Lily’s blood relationship with Petunia helps sustain a protective enchantment at their home. In *Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows*, Snape’s memories reveal that his love for Lily endured after their friendship ended and that her murder influenced his actions against Voldemort. His Patronus takes the form of a doe, matching hers. Harry also finds part of a letter Lily wrote to Sirius Black, offering a rare glimpse of her everyday life as Harry’s mother. Later, the Resurrection Stone briefly brings Harry an image of Lily as he walks into the Forbidden Forest to face Voldemort.
