Hal Jordan is a fictional test pilot from Coast City who becomes the Green Lantern of Sector 2814 after Abin Sur dies on Earth. Created by John Broome and Gil Kane, he first appeared in Showcase #22 (October 1959), replacing Alan Scott as DC Comics' principal Green Lantern. His origin begins when Abin Sur's damaged spacecraft lands near Coast City; the dying alien gives Jordan his power ring and lantern after the ring identifies him as fearless. The ring transports Jordan to Oa, the home of the Guardians of the Universe, who administer an interstellar police force called the Green Lantern Corps. As a Lantern, he patrols Sector 2814, which includes Earth, while working alongside alien officers such as Sinestro, Tomar-Re, and Kilowog. Sinestro initially serves as Jordan's mentor, but his authoritarian methods and secret rule over Korugar eventually expose him as an enemy. This conflict culminates in Sinestro becoming a recurring antagonist and later founding the Sinestro Corps, whose yellow rings draw power from fear rather than will. Jordan's defining weapon is his ring, which creates solid constructs through willpower, but its traditional weakness is the color yellow, because the Corps cannot affect the color of fear. The limitation is tied to Parallax, an entity representing fear that was imprisoned in the Central Power Battery on Oa. The storyline "Emerald Twilight," published in 1993, depicts Jordan breaking after the destruction of Coast City, his hometown. He attempts to absorb the Central Power Battery's energy, defeats the Corps, and becomes Parallax, a major shift from heroic protector to cosmic threat. Later stories reframe this fall by revealing that Parallax had possessed him, allowing Jordan to return as Green Lantern. In "Green Lantern: Rebirth," a 2004 miniseries written by Geoff Johns and drawn by Ethan Van Sciver, Jordan is restored and Parallax is separated from his identity. Jordan subsequently serves as a central member of the Justice League, alongside heroes including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and the Flash. His relationship with Carol Ferris is central to his civilian life; she is an aerospace executive and becomes Star Sapphire, an opponent powered by the violet light of love. Jordan's closest allies include John Stewart, Guy Gardner, and Kyle Rayner, each of whom has carried the Green Lantern mantle. In the 2011 film Green Lantern, Ryan Reynolds portrays Jordan, who receives his ring after Abin Sur's death.
