Deathstroke is the codename of Slade Wilson, a DC Comics mercenary created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist George Pérez for The New Teen Titans. He first appeared in issue number 2, published in December 1980, as an enemy of the team. His debut established his mercenary profession at once.

Slade’s history explains his distinctive abilities. He volunteered for a dangerous experimental treatment while serving in the military, gaining enhanced strength, speed, stamina, reflexes, and healing. The procedure also damaged his brain, though it did not remove his intelligence. He became a disciplined tactician, weapons expert, swordsman, and hand-to-hand fighter.

His family is central to the character. Slade married Adeline Kane, a military intelligence operative, and they had two sons, Grant and Joseph. Grant became the first Ravager and died after accepting a contract connected to the Titans. Joseph became Jericho, a Titan whose voice was lost after an attack.

Deathstroke’s storyline is “The Judas Contract,” written by Wolfman and drawn by Pérez. In 1984, Titans are infiltrated by Terra, who works for Deathstroke and the secretive H.I.V.E. organization. Deathstroke captures team, but Dick Grayson becomes Nightwing and leads the rescue. The story cemented Deathstroke’s place among major DC antagonists.

Although he is an antagonist, Deathstroke has appeared in uneasy alliances with heroes. He has worked with the Titans, Batman, Green Arrow, and other DC figures when a larger threat or objective required cooperation. Partnerships do not erase his mercenary ethics: he honors contracts, exploits weakness, and can betray allies.

Outside comics, Deathstroke became known through television. He appeared in Teen Titans, where the character is often called Slade and serves as the principal threat across the season. The series emphasizes his psychological intimidation and rivalry with Robin, while withholding his civilian name. This version helped distinguish him from ordinary supervillains.

Deathstroke also received screen interpretation in the series Arrow, played by Manu Bennett. The show presents Slade Wilson as a soldier and ally of Oliver Queen before betrayal, experimentation, grief turn him against Oliver. Joe Manganiello portrayed Deathstroke in the DC Universe, appearing in Justice League and a post-credit scene.

In comics, his identity and continuity have changed with eras, but details remain recognizable: Slade Wilson is a contract killer with military training, abilities, and a fractured family. His half-mask, tactical armor, and use of swords, firearms, and explosives reinforce a visual identity built around warfare rather than superhuman conquest.
