Dragon Ball Z is the second television anime adaptation of Akira Toriyama’s manga Dragon Ball, following the original series and adapting the manga from its 17th volume onward. Produced by Toei Animation, it first aired on Fuji TV in Japan on April 26, 1989, and concluded on January 31, 1996. Its 291 episodes cover the arrival of the Saiyans, the conflict on Namek, the androids and Cell, and the appearance of Majin Buu.

The opening story reveals that Goku is a Saiyan, an alien warrior sent to Earth as a baby. His brother Raditz arrives and tells him about his origins, prompting Goku and Piccolo to cooperate against him. Goku dies in the battle, then trains with King Kai in the afterlife while his friends prepare for the arrival of Vegeta and Nappa. The fight against the Saiyans leaves several of Earth’s defenders dead and sends Goku’s son, Gohan, into the conflict.

After the invasion, Bulma, Gohan, and Krillin travel to Namek to seek that planet’s Dragon Balls. There they confront Frieza, whose forces are searching for the same wish-granting orbs. Goku eventually joins the battle and, after Frieza kills Krillin, becomes a Super Saiyan for the first time. The transformation is one of the series’ defining moments and changes the balance of the fight. Frieza is defeated, though the story continues beyond Namek.

The later arcs introduce Dr. Gero’s androids and Cell, a bioengineered fighter created from the cells of several powerful characters. Gohan’s struggle against Cell culminates in his transformation into Super Saiyan 2 and his victory in the Cell Games, after Goku sacrifices himself to prevent Cell from destroying Earth. Years later, Goku’s friends face Majin Buu, a magical being whose forms and destructive power make him a different kind of threat. The final battle involves Goku, Vegeta, and the people of Earth, whose gathered energy helps defeat Kid Buu.

Dragon Ball Z expanded the franchise’s international reach through television broadcasts and home video releases. In the United States, Funimation’s English-language dub helped establish the series with a new audience; its first syndicated run began in 1996. The English version’s music and dialogue differ from the original Japanese production, and later releases offered revised translations and scores. The anime also inspired theatrical films, video games, and merchandise, while its characters and storylines became central to the broader Dragon Ball franchise. Goku’s battles, Vegeta’s changing allegiance, and Gohan’s growth give the series a continuing narrative that connects its major confrontations.
