Witch Hat Atelier is the television anime adaptation of Kamome Shirahama’s manga series, Tongari Bōshi no Atorie in Japanese. The story begins with Coco, a girl from an ordinary village who has long dreamed of becoming a witch. In her world, most people believe magical talent is inborn and inaccessible to outsiders. Coco discovers, however, that spells are made by drawing precise signs with special ink.
After finding a magical book and attempting a spell she has seen used by the witch Qifrey, Coco accidentally turns her mother to stone and destroys her family home. Qifrey recognizes that Coco has learned a truth normally hidden from non-witches: magic is not an inherited gift, but a craft based on drawn symbols. To protect Coco and investigate the forbidden book, he brings her to his atelier as an apprentice.
At Qifrey’s workshop, Coco studies alongside Agott, Tetia, Richeh, and Euini. Their training involves more than learning spectacular spells. Each spell must be designed carefully, because the shape, arrangement, and completion of its lines determine its effect. The series uses this rule to make magic resemble illustration, calligraphy, drafting, and problem-solving, reflecting Shirahama’s detailed artwork and professional background as an illustrator.
Coco’s arrival also exposes a dangerous conflict within the magical world. Witches who follow accepted rules are associated with pointed hats, while the mysterious Brimmed Caps use forbidden magic. The forbidden practices include spells capable of altering bodies, memories, and minds. Coco’s mother’s condition and the book that reached Coco connect directly to this hidden struggle, giving her apprenticeship a personal urgency.
The original Witch Hat Atelier manga began serialization in Kodansha’s Monthly Morning Two magazine in 2016. It has received major recognition, including an Eisner Award for Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia in 2020, for the English-language release published by Kodansha USA. Shirahama is also known internationally for comics work and illustration, including cover art for Marvel titles.
The anime adaptation was announced in April 2022. It is being produced by Bug Films, with Ayumu Watanabe attached as director. Watanabe’s earlier directing work includes Children of the Sea and the television adaptation of Komi Can’t Communicate. The project’s promotional material has emphasized Coco’s first encounter with Qifrey and the ornate visual language of spell circles, central elements of the manga’s identity.
