Re:Zero -Starting Life in Another World- follows Subaru Natsuki, a Japanese teenager who is suddenly transported from a convenience store to the fantasy kingdom of Lugunica. Unlike the overwhelmingly powerful heroes common to isekai stories, Subaru discovers that his defining ability is “Return by Death”: whenever he dies, he awakens at an earlier point in time while retaining memories of the failed timeline. He cannot freely explain this power; attempts to do so bring a supernatural threat that crushes his heart.

At first, Subaru meets the half-elf Emilia, who is searching for her stolen insignia, and her spirit companion Puck. Determined to repay Emilia’s kindness, he becomes entangled with Felt, the thief who took the insignia, and Reinhard van Astrea, the Sword Saint. Subaru’s repeated deaths reveal the attack patterns of Elsa Granhiert, the assassin known as the Bowel Hunter. Later arcs move to Roswaal L Mathers’s mansion, where Subaru befriends the twin maids Ram and Rem, confronts the demon-beast curse around Arlam Village, and faces the Witch Cult.

The television anime adapts Tappei Nagatsuki’s light novel series, illustrated by Shinichirou Otsuka and published by MF Bunko J. The first TV season, produced by White Fox, aired in Japan from April to September 2016 and ran for 25 episodes. It was directed by Masaharu Watanabe, with series composition by Masahiro Yokotani. A Director’s Cut version reorganized the first season into hour-long episodes in 2020. The second season aired in two parts, from July to September 2020 and from January to March 2021.

Season two centers on the Sanctuary and intensifies Subaru’s conflict with Witch of Greed Echidna, whose tea-party realm lets him discuss Return by Death more directly than usual. It also explores Emilia’s past, including her connection to frozen Elior Forest, and presents the Great Rabbit as one of the threats surrounding Sanctuary. The anime’s third season, titled Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- Season 3, premiered in October 2024. Across its story, Subaru’s looping does not erase emotional consequences: he alone carries knowledge of deaths, broken relationships, and disasters that others never remember. This structure makes his victories dependent on observation, persistence, and the trust he gradually earns from allies, rather than on a reset that leaves him untouched. The first season’s final episode resolves the White Whale and Sloth conflicts after Subaru forms an alliance with Crusch Karsten and Anastasia Hoshin to finally defeat Betelgeuse Romanee-Conti.
