Brooklyn Nine-Nine is an American police procedural sitcom created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur. It premiered on Fox on September 17, 2013, and follows the fictional 99th Precinct of the New York City Police Department in Brooklyn. The show’s central detective, Jake Peralta, played by Andy Samberg, is highly skilled but immature. His casual approach collides with Captain Raymond Holt, portrayed by Andre Braugher, an exacting officer assigned to lead the precinct. Holt’s partnership with Jake becomes the series’ key comic and emotional relationship, as each gradually changes the other’s assumptions about work, leadership, and adulthood. The precinct itself

includes Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero), Jake’s ambitious rival and eventual wife; Sergeant Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews), a father and squad supervisor; Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz), a private, formidable detective; Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio), Jake’s intensely loyal partner; and civilian administrator Gina Linetti (Chelsea Peretti). Michael Hitchcock (Dirk Blocker) and Norm Scully (Joel McKinnon Miller) are veteran detectives with a long friendship. Holt’s husband, Kevin Cozner, is played by Marc Evan Jackson. The regular cast also features recurring characters including madcap criminal Doug Judy, known as the Pontiac Bandit, played by Craig Robinson. Their distinct relationships support both workplace comedy

and longer storylines. Jake and Amy begin as colleagues, date after a wager, marry in the season five finale, and later become parents. Rosa comes out as bisexual in the season five episode “99,” a development shaped with input from Stephanie Beatriz. Terry repeatedly seeks advancement while balancing family responsibilities, and Holt faces institutional obstacles as a Black gay police leader. The series also returns annually to Halloween Heists, escalating contests among the characters for a designated prize and the title of “Ultimate Human/Genius.” Cases, stakeouts, interrogations, and department politics provide the procedural framework for these personal and comic arcs.

Fox cancelled Brooklyn Nine-Nine in May 2018, after five seasons. Following a public response to the cancellation, NBC picked up the series for a sixth season the next day. It ultimately ran for eight seasons and 153 episodes, ending on September 16, 2021. Its final season incorporated the aftermath of the murder of George Floyd and debates about policing; Jake resigns from the NYPD to care for his son, Mac, while Amy pursues a reform-oriented role in the department. The program also won the 2014 Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series, Musical or Comedy; Samberg won Best Actor too.
