Ted Raimi

Ted Raimi was born December 14, 1965, in Detroit, Michigan. He is the younger brother of filmmaker Sam Raimi and actor Ivan Raimi, and his career has repeatedly intersected with Sam’s films and television productions. His early screen work included small parts in The Evil Dead (1981) and Crimewave (1985), before he became especially recognizable in Evil Dead II (1987). In that horror sequel, he performed the physically demanding role of the possessed Henrietta, the cellar-dwelling deadite whose exaggerated makeup and movement helped define the film’s grotesque comedy. Raimi returned to the Evil Dead world decades later as Chet Kaminski in Ash vs. Evil Dead (2015–2018). Chet, a longtime friend of Ash Williams, was introduced in the second season and became involved in the battle against Deadites. The series reunited Raimi with Bruce Campbell, whose Ash had anchored the earlier films. On television, Raimi played Lieutenant Tim O’Neill on seaQuest DSV, appearing as a member of the submarine’s crew during the science-fiction drama’s original run. He is also closely associated with Joxer the Mighty, the comically boastful yet loyal warrior on Xena: Warrior Princess. Joxer appeared across the series’ 1995–2001 run and also turned up on Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, placing the character within the connected “Xenaverse.” Raimi’s performance made Joxer’s misplaced confidence, musical interludes, and affection for Gabrielle recurring parts of the show’s comic texture. In Sam Raimi’s Darkman (1990), Ted Raimi played Rick, one of Robert Durant’s criminal associates. He later appeared in all three of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films, portraying Hoffman, J. Jonah Jameson’s harried Daily Bugle assistant. Hoffman shares scenes with J.K. Simmons’s Jameson and appears amid the newspaper office storylines that surround Peter Parker’s photographs of Spider-Man. Raimi also appeared in Takashi Shimizu’s American remake The Grudge (2004), playing Alex, a character caught in the film’s chain of supernatural deaths connected to the Saeki house in Tokyo. His credits additionally include the films Candyman (1992), where he played Billy, and Intruder (1989), the supermarket slasher directed by Scott Spiegel. Although he has often taken supporting roles, Raimi’s screen history is unusually identifiable through recurring work in franchises and productions linked to his brother and to genre filmmaking. His roles range from monster performance and horror victims to the broad comedy of Joxer and Hoffman’s anxious newsroom reactions. Those contrasting credits have kept him visible to audiences across cult horror, fantasy television, and superhero cinema alike.
