Taffarel

Cláudio André Mergen Taffarel, born on 8 May 1966 in Santa Rosa, Rio Grande do Sul, became one of Brazil’s defining goalkeepers of the 1990s. Known professionally as Taffarel, he began his senior career with Internacional of Porto Alegre, where he played from 1985 to 1990. His performances there brought him into Brazil’s national-team picture and led to a move to Italy with Parma in 1990, at a time when Brazilian goalkeepers rarely became prominent figures in European football. Taffarel represented Brazil at three consecutive FIFA World Cups: 1990, 1994 and 1998. His most famous tournament was the 1994 World Cup in the United States, where he was Brazil’s first-choice goalkeeper throughout its successful campaign. In the final against Italy at the Rose Bowl, the match ended 0–0 after extra time. During the penalty shootout, Taffarel saved Daniele Massaro’s kick; Brazil won 3–2 after Roberto Baggio sent Italy’s final penalty over the crossbar. The victory gave Brazil its fourth World Cup title. At the 1998 World Cup in France, Taffarel again reached the final with Brazil. In the semifinal against the Netherlands, he saved penalties from Ronald de Boer and Phillip Cocu in the shootout, helping Brazil advance after a 1–1 draw. Brazil later lost the final 3–0 to hosts France. Taffarel also won a silver medal with Brazil at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games and was part of Copa América-winning squads in 1991 and 1997. Brazil won the 1997 FIFA Confederations Cup as well. After Parma, Taffarel played for Reggiana, Atlético Mineiro and Galatasaray. His Galatasaray period was especially significant. In 2000, the Turkish club won the UEFA Cup, defeating Arsenal on penalties in the final in Copenhagen after a goalless match. Taffarel was Galatasaray’s goalkeeper in that final. Later that year, Galatasaray defeated Real Madrid 2–1 after extra time to win the UEFA Super Cup. Taffarel returned to Parma in 2001 and ended his playing career there in 2003. He accumulated 101 appearances for Brazil, establishing a national-record total for a goalkeeper that stood for years. After retiring, he moved into coaching, serving as a goalkeeping coach for Brazil’s national team and, from 2021, working with Liverpool’s goalkeepers. His career is inseparable from Brazil’s 1994 triumph, but it also includes major club trophies in Italy and Turkey and decisive performances in two World Cup penalty shootouts.
