Noriyuki Abe

Noriyuki Abe is a Japanese anime director whose career is closely linked with Studio Pierrot and with television adaptations of major Weekly Shonen Jump manga. He directed the television anime Yu Yu Hakusho, based on Yoshihiro Togashi’s manga, which aired from 1992 to 1995. The series follows delinquent Yusuke Urameshi, who becomes an Underworld Detective after his death. Abe’s other early television directing credits include Ninku, the 1995–1996 adaptation of Koji Kiriyama’s manga about the former Ninku fighter Fuusuke. He directed Flame of Recca (1997–1998), adapted from Nobuyuki Anzai’s manga and centered on Recca Hanabishi, a teenager able to produce flames; Great Teacher Onizuka (1999–2000), based on Tooru Fujisawa’s manga about former biker Eikichi Onizuka’s work as a teacher; and Tokyo Mew Mew (2002–2003), based on Reiko Yoshida and Mia Ikumi’s magical-girl manga. These productions place him among the directors who handled Pierrot’s adaptations across action, comedy, school drama, and fantasy. Abe is especially identified with Bleach, the television adaptation of Tite Kubo’s manga. He directed the series, which began in October 2004 and concluded its original television run in March 2012 after 366 episodes. Its protagonist, Ichigo Kurosaki, acquires Soul Reaper powers from Rukia Kuchiki and confronts Hollows and other spiritual enemies. Abe also directed the first three Bleach theatrical films: Memories of Nobody (2006), The DiamondDust Rebellion (2007), and Fade to Black (2008). Outside Bleach, he directed Black Butler: Book of Circus (2014), a television adaptation of the Circus Arc in Yana Toboso’s manga. The production follows Ciel and Sebastian as they investigate disappearances connected to Noah’s Ark Circus. Abe also directed the two-part OVA Black Butler: Book of Murder (2014) and film Black Butler: Book of Atlantic (2017). He was director of The Heroic Legend of Arslan (2015), adapting Hiromu Arakawa’s manga version of Yoshiki Tanaka’s fantasy novels. His credits also include episode direction, storyboards, and animation work. Yet the defining pattern of his filmography is not merely volume: it is his repeated involvement with long-form manga adaptations whose stories combine supernatural conflict with strong central characters. From Yusuke’s investigations and Ichigo’s Soul Reaper battles to Onizuka’s classroom confrontations and Arslan’s struggle to reclaim his kingdom, Abe has directed works built around recognizable source material and serialized narrative arcs. His record therefore connects him to several influential anime franchises rather than to a single isolated hit. It also demonstrates a career spanning more than three decades in animation.
