Nathan Fielder

Nathan Fielder is a Canadian comedian, writer, actor, and producer whose television work turns business advice, documentary conventions, and reality programming into elaborate experiments. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, on May 12, 1983, he studied commerce at the University of British Columbia and graduated in 2005. He then attended Humber College’s comedy program in Toronto. Before leading his own series, he worked on Canadian Idol and wrote for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation comedy program This Hour Has 22 Minutes. His breakthrough came with Comedy Central’s Nathan for You, which ran from 2013 to 2017. In each episode, Fielder played a heightened version of himself, a deadpan consultant offering struggling small businesses intentionally strange promotional plans. The show’s real-world interventions included the “Dumb Starbucks” stunt, in which a Los Angeles shop was presented as a parody coffee outlet, and a promotion involving the Summit Ice Apparel clothing company. Its finale, “Finding Frances,” followed Fielder and Bill Heath as they searched for Heath’s former girlfriend; the feature-length episode shifted the series toward a more openly emotional and investigative form. Fielder created, co-wrote, directed, and starred in HBO’s The Rehearsal, which premiered in 2022. The series gives participants intricately constructed rehearsals for difficult conversations or decisions. One storyline follows Angela, a woman preparing to raise a child in a recreated household, while actors portray changing versions of a son. The program also examines its own ethical complications as Fielder becomes increasingly involved in the simulations. HBO renewed it for a second season. In 2023 Fielder co-created Showtime’s scripted series The Curse with Benny Safdie and co-starred opposite Emma Stone. Fielder plays Asher Siegel, one half of a married couple making a home-improvement television program in Española, New Mexico. The show combines marital strain, gentrification, reality-television performance, and an alleged curse after the couple encounters a young girl. He also served as an executive producer on HBO’s How To with John Wilson, a documentary comedy series narrated by Wilson and built from New York City footage. Fielder’s on-screen persona is recognizable for its formal, hesitant delivery and willingness to let plans become uncomfortable. Yet his projects depend on substantial production design: Nathan for You staged businesses and public events, while The Rehearsal built detailed replicas of locations. This combination of improvised encounters and carefully engineered settings has made his work unusually difficult to classify by familiar, stable genre categories.
