Jeff Probst

Jeff Probst is an American television host, producer, and director best known for hosting the reality competition series Survivor. Born on November 4, 1961, in Wichita, Kansas, and raised in Bellevue, Washington, Probst began his television career working behind the scenes and hosting programs for local and cable networks. Before Survivor, he hosted FX’s Backchat, a talk show that aired in the early 1990s, and produced projects through his own production company.

Survivor premiered on CBS in May 2000, adapted from the Swedish series Expedition Robinson. The program places contestants in remote locations where they form alliances, compete in physical and strategic challenges, vote one another out, and ultimately select a winner. Probst became the show’s central on-screen figure, explaining rules, moderating tribal councils, reading votes, and presenting the final immunity challenge. His repeated phrase, “The tribe has spoken,” became closely associated with the series. He has hosted every American season, including editions filmed in locations such as Borneo, Australia, Africa, the Pearl Islands, China, and Fiji.

Probst has won multiple Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program. Survivor also earned him recognition as an executive producer, and he has been involved in the show’s production as well as its presentation. His hosting style combines formal rule explanation with direct questioning, especially during tribal council, where he often challenges contestants about alliances, deception, and strategic choices.

Outside Survivor, Probst directed the 2001 romantic comedy Finder’s Fee, starring Ryan Reynolds, James Earl Jones, and Robert Forster. The film follows several friends whose poker game is disrupted when one of them finds a winning lottery ticket. Probst also hosted The Jeff Probst Show, a syndicated daytime talk program that debuted in 2012 and ended after one season.

His career has remained strongly connected to Survivor, whose long-running format has made him one of television’s most recognizable reality hosts. Probst’s role extends beyond announcing results: he helps define the show’s narrative, maintains its rules, and serves as the audience’s guide through evolving strategies, conflicts, and alliances. Through more than two decades of broadcasts, he has become inseparable from the program’s identity and its distinctive language of competition, elimination, and survival.
