Hulk (footballer)

Givanildo Vieira de Sousa, widely known as Hulk, is a Brazilian footballer born on 25 July 1986 in Campina Grande, Paraíba. A powerful left-footed forward and winger, he earned his nickname as a child because of his physical strength and resemblance to the comic-book character. Hulk began his professional career with Vitória in Brazil, but his early senior career developed primarily in Japan through loan spells with Kawasaki Frontale, Consadole Sapporo and Tokyo Verdy.

His breakthrough came at Tokyo Verdy in 2007, when he scored 37 league goals in 42 appearances in Japan’s second division. He then joined Porto in 2008. At the Portuguese club, Hulk became one of Europe’s most productive attacking players, helping Porto win four consecutive Primeira Liga titles from 2008–09 to 2011–12. He was also central to André Villas-Boas’s 2010–11 team, which won the league, the Portuguese Cup and the UEFA Europa League. Porto defeated Braga 1–0 in the Europa League final in Dublin, with Radamel Falcao scoring the decisive goal.

In September 2012, Hulk moved to Zenit Saint Petersburg in Russia. With Zenit, he won the Russian Premier League in 2014–15 and became the league’s top scorer in 2014–15 with 15 goals. He later joined Shanghai SIPG, now known as Shanghai Port, in 2016. During his time in China, he helped the club win its first Chinese Super League championship in 2018 and the Chinese FA Super Cup in 2019.

Hulk returned to Brazil in 2021 to sign for Atlético Mineiro. His impact was immediate: Atlético won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A in 2021, ending a 50-year wait for the national title, and also won the Copa do Brasil that year. Hulk finished as the Brasileirão’s leading scorer in 2021 and received major individual recognition, including the Bola de Ouro award for the league’s best player. Atlético also won the Campeonato Mineiro in 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024.

For Brazil, Hulk made his senior international debut in 2009. He represented the national team at the 2012 Olympic Games, where Brazil won the silver medal, and was part of the squad that won the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. He also played at the 2014 FIFA World Cup on home soil. Known for his explosive acceleration, long-range shooting and unusually strong physique, Hulk has played successfully in South America, Asia and Europe.
