Emily Blunt

Emily Blunt is a British actor whose career has moved between period drama, musical fantasy, comedy, action, and biographical film. Born in London on 23 February 1983, she was raised in Roehampton and attended Hurtwood House, a performing-arts boarding school. As a child, she had a stutter; she has said that adopting different voices in a school play helped her speak more fluently. Her screen breakthrough came with the 2006 film The Devil Wears Prada, where she played Emily Charlton, the sharply ambitious assistant to Meryl Streep’s fashion editor Miranda Priestly. Her television work that year included Gideon’s Daughter, in which she appeared opposite Bill Nighy and won a Golden Globe for best supporting actress. She later played Queen Victoria in The Young Victoria (2009), a film written by Julian Fellowes, and earned a Golden Globe nomination for the title role. In 2011, she starred with Matt Damon in The Adjustment Bureau and joined the ensemble comedy Salmon Fishing in the Yemen, receiving another Golden Globe nomination. Blunt demonstrated her singing in Rob Marshall’s Into the Woods (2014), playing the Baker’s Wife in Stephen Sondheim’s screen musical. The same year, she led Edge of Tomorrow opposite Tom Cruise, portraying Rita Vrataski, the formidable soldier nicknamed the “Angel of Verdun.” In 2015, she played FBI agent Kate Macer in Denis Villeneuve’s Sicario, alongside Benicio del Toro and Josh Brolin; the story follows Kate after her recruitment into an escalating operation against Mexican drug cartels. She received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for the performance. With John Krasinski, whom she married in 2010, Blunt made A Quiet Place (2018), playing Evelyn Abbott in a near-silent thriller about a family surviving creatures that hunt by sound. Krasinski directed and co-wrote the film, and Blunt won the Screen Actors Guild Award for female actor in a supporting role. She returned as Evelyn in A Quiet Place Part II (2021). Blunt portrayed Mary Poppins in Disney’s Mary Poppins Returns (2018), singing songs including “The Place Where Lost Things Go.” In 2023, she played Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, opposite Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer. Her depiction of the physicist’s wife brought Academy Award and BAFTA nominations for supporting actress. Beyond acting, she has voiced characters in animation, including Tempest Shadow in My Little Pony: The Movie and Juliet in Gnomeo & Juliet. She also appeared in the thriller Wind Chill (2007) with Ashton Holmes.
