Dana Terrace

Dana Terrace is an American animator, writer, director, and creator best known for developing Disney Television Animation’s fantasy-comedy series *The Owl House*. Born on December 8, 1990, she grew up in Hamden, Connecticut, and later studied animation at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Her early professional work included storyboarding and revision work on animated productions before she became associated with several prominent Disney television projects.

Terrace worked as a storyboard revisionist on *Gravity Falls*, the mystery-comedy series created by Alex Hirsch. She later served as a storyboard artist and director on Disney’s 2017 revival of *DuckTales*. Her experience on those shows helped establish her reputation for visual comedy, supernatural storytelling, expressive character animation, and densely packed background details.

In 2020, Disney Channel premiered *The Owl House*, created and executive produced by Terrace. The series follows Luz Noceda, a human teenager who discovers a portal to the Boiling Isles, a bizarre magical realm inhabited by witches, demons, and other creatures. Rather than returning immediately to the human world, Luz becomes determined to learn magic and studies under the rebellious witch Eda Clawthorne, known as the Owl Lady. Luz’s small but formidable companion is King, a demon who dreams of restoring his supposed royal status.

The show’s principal cast also includes Amity Blight, a high-achieving student from a powerful witch family; Willow Park; Gus Porter; Eda’s sister Lilith; and the Golden Guard, later revealed as Hunter. Across its run, *The Owl House* expanded from episodic magical adventures into a serialized story involving Emperor Belos, the Coven system, the Day of Unity, and the true history of the Boiling Isles.

Terrace’s series received particular attention for its LGBTQ+ representation. Luz and Amity’s relationship became a central romantic storyline, making Luz one of Disney’s first bisexual lead characters in an animated series. The show also included nonbinary character Raine Whispers, voiced by nonbinary actor Avi Roque. Terrace publicly discussed the difficulty of pursuing queer representation within a major family-entertainment company, while emphasizing the importance of depicting such characters openly.

Disney announced that *The Owl House* would end after its third season. The final season consisted of three extended specials rather than a standard full episode order: “Thanks to Them,” “For the Future,” and “Watching and Dreaming.” The finale premiered in April 2023, concluding Luz’s conflict with Belos and the Collector. Despite its shortened final run, the series developed a substantial fan community and was widely praised for its animation, emotional character arcs, fantasy worldbuilding, and commitment to inclusive storytelling.
