Antônio Lopes

Antônio Lopes is a Brazilian football manager whose most important achievements were built in the country’s major club competitions. Born in Rio de Janeiro on June 12, 1941, he became widely known by the nickname “Delegado,” a reference to his earlier work as a police officer. His coaching career included several spells with Vasco da Gama, Corinthians, Cruzeiro, Atlético Paranaense, Fluminense, Flamengo, Santos, Botafogo and other Brazilian clubs.

His strongest association is with Vasco da Gama. Lopes coached the Rio de Janeiro side during one of the most successful periods in its modern history. In 1997, Vasco won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A under his command, with a team featuring figures such as Edmundo, Romário, Juninho Pernambucano and Felipe. The title was particularly memorable because Vasco secured it in the club’s centenary year. Lopes followed that domestic success with the 1998 Copa Libertadores, Vasco’s first and only Libertadores title. In the final, Vasco defeated Ecuador’s Barcelona Sporting Club 4–1 on aggregate, winning 2–0 in Rio de Janeiro and 2–1 in Guayaquil.

Lopes also led Vasco to the 1998 Campeonato Carioca title and the 1999 Rio de Janeiro state championship. His work at the club was characterized by a pragmatic approach, balancing technically gifted attacking players with defensive organization. The 1998 Libertadores-winning squad included goalkeeper Carlos Germano, defenders Mauro Galvão and Odvan, midfielder Juninho Pernambucano, and forwards Edmundo and Luizão.

Outside Vasco, Lopes won the 1997 Campeonato Brasileiro with Corinthians. That team finished ahead of Palmeiras in the final phase of the competition and included players such as Marcelinho Carioca, Edílson, Rincón and Luizão. Earlier, he had won the 1996 Copa do Brasil with Cruzeiro. Cruzeiro defeated Palmeiras in the final, drawing 1–1 in Belo Horizonte before winning 2–1 at the Palestra Itália stadium in São Paulo. He also won the 1996 Campeonato Mineiro with Cruzeiro.

In 2005, Lopes added another Brazilian league championship to his record when Atlético Paranaense won the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. The Curitiba club finished the league season with 79 points, ahead of Internacional. The title remains Atlético Paranaense’s only Brazilian national league championship.
