Dune: Part Three

Dune: Part Three is Warner Bros.’ planned continuation of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films, dated for theatrical release in December 2026. The date associated with the project is December 18 in the United States; December 17 can apply in territories opening films a day earlier. It follows Dune (2021) and Dune: Part Two (2024), both directed by Villeneuve and adapted from Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel Dune. The production is the third Villeneuve-directed feature set on Arrakis, the desert planet whose spice melange is central to Herbert’s universe. Villeneuve has identified Herbert’s 1969 sequel Dune Messiah as the main source for his film about Paul Atreides’ reign.

Part Two ends with Paul, played by Timothée Chalamet, defeating Austin Butler’s Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in ritual combat and taking the imperial throne through marriage to Princess Irulan, portrayed by Florence Pugh. Zendaya’s Chani rejects that political settlement and leaves into the desert. Those developments matter because Dune Messiah begins after Paul’s rise to power, examining the consequences of the religious war launched in his name. Villeneuve has said he wants the third film to complete Paul’s story, while also describing Dune Messiah as a substantially different tale from the first novel. His public comments have stressed that this continuation will not simply replay military campaign.

The previous films established a major creative and commercial context for the new installment. Dune won six Academy Awards, including cinematography, visual effects, sound, film editing, production design, and original score. Dune: Part Two received five Academy Award nominations and won Oscars for visual effects and sound. Villeneuve again works within a screen world defined by the Bene Gesserit, the Fremen, the Harkonnens, the imperial court, and the hazards of prescience. The first two films divided Herbert’s novel: the 2021 film closes with Paul joining Chani and Stilgar’s Fremen, while the 2024 film covers war against House Harkonnen and Emperor Shaddam IV.

Villeneuve co-wrote the screenplays for the first two films with Jon Spaihts; Eric Roth also shares a writing credit on Dune. Hans Zimmer composed their scores, and Greig Fraser served as cinematographer. The director has repeatedly said that a third Dune feature would be his final film in the series, making Part Three distinct from an open-ended franchise announcement. Warner Bros. has positioned it as an event release following the large-scale theatrical runs of its predecessors. Its story is expected to return to political and prophetic aftermath of Paul’s victory, not to restart Herbert’s chronology. The release remains scheduled for 2026 theatrically.
