Monkey D. Luffy

Monkey D. Luffy is the central pirate protagonist of Eiichiro Oda’s manga and anime series One Piece. He first appears in Chapter 1, “Romance Dawn,” published in 1997, as a boy from Foosha Village in the East Blue. Luffy’s childhood is shaped by the Red-Haired Pirates, especially their captain, Shanks. After Luffy accidentally eats the Gum-Gum Fruit, he gains a rubberlike body but loses the ability to swim. When a Sea King attacks, Shanks saves him at the cost of his left arm and gives Luffy his straw hat, asking him to return it after becoming a great pirate. At seventeen, Luffy leaves East Blue aboard a small boat with two stated ambitions: to find Gol D. Roger’s treasure, the One Piece, and to become King of the Pirates. His early voyage establishes the Straw Hat crew. He frees Roronoa Zoro from Captain Morgan’s Marine base, joins forces with thief and navigator Nami, recruits Usopp from Syrup Village, and wins Sanji’s loyalty after defending the floating restaurant Baratie. Their first vessel is the Going Merry, a ship given to them after the defeat of Captain Kuro. Luffy’s defining confrontations are tied to the oppressive systems of the One Piece world. He defeats the Fish-Man pirate Arlong after Arlong’s crew exploits Nami and occupies Cocoyasi Village. In Alabasta, Luffy battles the Warlord Crocodile, whose Baroque Works organization seeks to overthrow the kingdom. At Enies Lobby, he declares war on the World Government to rescue archaeologist Nico Robin, ordering sniper Sogeking to burn the government flag. Later, he defeats Gecko Moria at Thriller Bark and confronts the celestial nobles’ power structure at Sabaody, where his attack on Saint Charlos leads to an Admiral’s arrival and the crew’s separation. Luffy’s failure to save his brother Portgas D. Ace at Marineford is one of his most consequential losses. Ace dies protecting him from Admiral Akainu after being freed from execution. Following two years of training with Silvers Rayleigh, Luffy reunites with his crew and develops stronger use of Haki, including Conqueror’s Haki. In Wano, Luffy defeats Kaido after awakening his Devil Fruit. The fruit is revealed not to be the Paramecia-type Gum-Gum Fruit, but the Mythical Zoan Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika. This awakening is called Gear Five and connects Luffy to the figure known as the “Sun God” Nika. After Wano, the World Government recognizes him as one of the Four Emperors, while his straw hat remains the symbol of his promise to Shanks.
