Esta carta sería beneficiosa en un mazo de control que tiene como objetivo interrumpir los hechizos del oponente mientras también tiene una amenaza voladora en el campo. Sin embargo, en Magic: The Gathering competitivo, hay contramagias más eficientes disponibles, como Counterspell o Mana Drain, que no requieren una criatura en el campo de batalla. Aunque Draining Whelk tiene sus fortalezas, es posible que no se juegue tanto en mazos competitivos de alto nivel debido a su mayor costo de maná y su dependencia de ser una criatura para su efecto.

If the target spell is an illegal target by the time Draining Whelk’s ability tries to resolve, the spell doesn’t resolve. You don’t put any counters on Draining Whelk. If the target is legal but the spell can’t be countered, you do put counters on Draining Whelk.

If the triggered ability doesn’t resolve (the targeted spell becomes an illegal target, for example), Draining Whelk doesn’t get any +1/+1 counters.
