About Emperor's Vanguard

Emperor's Vanguard, Creature — human scout, designed by Victor Adame Minguez first released in Sep, 2017 in the set Ixalan Promos and was printed exactly in 2 different ways.

Emperor's Vanguard would be beneficial in a midrange or aggressive green deck that focuses on combat damage and card advantage. While it provides a decent body and card selection through exploring, there are potentially better options like Jadelight Ranger or Merfolk Branchwalker that offer more consistent exploration triggers and value. However, Emperor's Vanguard could still see play in a deck looking for additional exploration effects or a solid beater in the mid to late game.

Rules

01/19/18

If a resolving spell or ability instructs a specific creature to explore but that creature has left the battlefield, the creature still explores. If you reveal a nonland card this way, you won’t put a +1/+1 counter on anything, but you may put the revealed card into your graveyard. Effects that trigger “whenever a creature you control explores” trigger if appropriate.

01/19/18

Once an ability that causes a creature to explore begins to resolve, no player may take any other actions until it’s done. Notably, opponents can’t try to remove the exploring creature after you reveal a nonland card but before it receives a counter.
