About Chalice of Death

Chalice of Death, Artifact, designed by Ryan Yee first released in Feb, 2012 in the set Dark Ascension.

The Chalice of Death would be particularly effective in a control or combo deck that aims to grind out the game and capitalize on life loss, especially in formats where life totals can be manipulated or where opponents have limited ways to gain life back. However, there are arguably better options for direct life loss, such as Torment of Hailfire, which scales with the amount of mana spent and can potentially deal more damage over time. While Chalice of Death can see play in niche strategies, it may not be the most efficient choice compared to other more powerful or versatile cards available in the game.

Your starting life total is the life total you began the game with. For most two-player formats, this is 20. For Two-Headed Giant, it’s the life total your team started with, usually 30. In Commander games, the starting life total is 40.
