Matt Reeves

Matt Reeves is an American filmmaker whose career moved from television drama to large-scale studio franchises and auteur-driven genre cinema.

Born in Rockville, Maryland, on April 27, 1966, Reeves grew up partly in Los Angeles alongside future filmmaker J.J. Abrams.

As teenagers, they made Super 8 films, and Reeves later attended the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts.

Reeves and Abrams sold a screenplay, The Pallbearer, while still students; Reeves directed its 1996 film adaptation starring David Schwimmer.

Before it reached theaters, however, Reeves had developed television experience, including work on Homicide: Life on the Street and Felicity.

He created Felicity with Abrams, serving as an executive producer on the college-set WB television series from 1998 through 2002.

His breakthrough as a director came with Cloverfield, the 2008 found-footage monster film produced by Abrams and released by Paramount.

Written by Drew Goddard, Cloverfield follows New Yorkers recording a catastrophic attack; viral marketing made the modest budget notable commercially.

Reeves directed Let Me In, a 2010 adaptation of John Ajvide Lindqvist's novel and Sweden's Let the Right One In.

The film stars Kodi Smit-McPhee as Owen and Chloe Grace Moretz as Abby, a mysterious vampire child living nearby alone.

In 2014, Reeves took over Dawn of the Planet of the Apes after Rupert Wyatt departed the sequel project unexpectedly.

Starring Andy Serkis in performance capture, Dawn depicts Caesar defending ape society as conflict escalates against nearby human survivors violently.

It earned strong reviews and commercial success, leading Reeves to direct War for the Planet of the Apes in 2017.

War follows Caesar amid a military campaign led by Woody Harrelson's Colonel, and it became Reeves's final Apes installment then.

Reeves next co-wrote and directed The Batman, released in 2022, with Robert Pattinson portraying a younger, investigative Bruce Wayne onscreen.

Rather than retell an origin story, the film centers on Batman's second year confronting Paul Dano's serial killer, the Riddler.

Zoë Kravitz plays Selina Kyle, while Jeffrey Wright appears as James Gordon and Colin Farrell transforms into Oswald Cobblepot physically.

Reeves collaborated with Peter Craig on the screenplay and shot the film with cinematographer Greig Fraser, favoring noir-inflected detective atmosphere.

The Batman earned over $770 million worldwide, and Warner Bros. announced a sequel, The Batman Part II following its release.

He also executive-produced The Penguin, the 2024 HBO crime drama starring Farrell, which continues the universe established by The Batman.
