Seu Jorge

Seu Jorge is the stage name of Jorge Mario da Silva, a Brazilian singer, songwriter, actor, and composer born on June 8, 1970, in Belford Roxo, Rio de Janeiro. His early years included poverty and a period of homelessness in Rio, before he joined the theatre group Companhia de Teatro Ubu and began reaching wider audiences. He first recorded with the band Farofa Carioca, whose 1998 album Moro no Brasil mixed samba, funk, rock, and other Brazilian rhythms. That background informed a solo approach rooted in samba yet open to soul, funk, and pop. His debut album, Samba Esporte Fino.

Released in 2001, it introduced songs including “Carolina,” which became a signature recording and later gave its title to an internationally issued version of the album. In Brazil, he became especially visible as an actor through Fernando Meirelles's 2002 film City of God, playing Mane Galinha, a character also called Knockout Ned in English-language materials. The crime drama, adapted from Paulo Lins's novel, brought the performer to audiences far beyond the Brazilian music scene. In 2004, he appeared in Wes Anderson's The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou as Pele dos Santos, a sailor and musician aboard the research vessel named Belafonte.

For that film, Seu Jorge performed Portuguese-language adaptations of David Bowie songs, often alone with acoustic guitar. Anderson chose not to use translations that attempted word-for-word equivalence: Jorge's versions reshaped Bowie's lyrics in Portuguese, and their restrained delivery became central to the film's sound world. The songs were collected as The Life Aquatic Studio Sessions Featuring Seu Jorge, released in 2005. Bowie publicly endorsed the interpretations, saying on his website that he had heard none of the songs in Portuguese before and found them “beautiful.” This association remains one of Jorge's most recognizable international achievements.

Jorge continued recording while acting in Brazilian and international productions. His 2004 album Cru emphasized his own songwriting, while America Brasil, released in 2007, included the hit “Burguesinha.” In 2010, he worked with guitarist Lucio Maia, drummer Pupillo, and composer Antonio Pinto in the group Almaz; their self-titled album interpreted material by artists such as Tim Maia, Kraftwerk, and Michael Jackson. He also played a recurring role as Edson in the Netflix series Irmandade. His 2012 album Musicas para Churrasco, Vol. 1, featured “Amiga da Minha Mulher.” Later, in 2020, he released the album Seu Jorge and Rogê with Brazilian musician Rogê, recorded live to tape.
