Heart of the Beast

Heart of the Beast is an upcoming survival thriller scheduled for release on September 24, 2026. The film stars Brad Pitt as a former U.S. Army Special Forces soldier whose attempt to return home becomes a fight for survival after a plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness. His only companion is a retired military combat dog, placing the relationship between the wounded veteran and the animal at the center of the story.

David Ayer is directing the film from a screenplay by Cameron Alexander. The project brings Pitt and Ayer together after their previous collaboration on Fury, the 2014 World War II drama in which Pitt played U.S. Army staff sergeant Don “Wardaddy” Collier. Heart of the Beast is a distinct project from that earlier film, however: its publicly announced premise is set in contemporary wilderness survival rather than on a battlefield during World War II.

The announced plot focuses specifically on the aftermath of the crash, with the former soldier and dog stranded in Alaska. That setup connects the character’s military past to immediate practical stakes: the dog is not simply a pet encountered during the journey, but a retired combat animal with a shared service background. Public descriptions have emphasized their struggle to make it out of the remote environment alive.

Pitt is producing through his company Plan B Entertainment. Ayer is also attached as a producer through Crave Films. Damien Chazelle is among the project’s producers through his production company, Wild Chickens Productions. The film was developed for Paramount Pictures, which announced the project with Pitt attached to star and Ayer attached to direct.

Cameron Alexander’s screenplay had previously appeared on The Black List, the annual survey of well-liked unproduced Hollywood screenplays. The film’s development therefore began with a script that had attracted industry attention before the announced casting and directing package was assembled.

As of the publicly announced details, Heart of the Beast has been defined by a deliberately narrow premise: one former Special Forces soldier, one retired combat dog, a plane crash, and the Alaskan wilderness surrounding them.
