My Hero Academia

My Hero Academia is a Japanese superhero anime adapted from Kohei Horikoshi's manga series, which began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in July 2014 and concluded in August 2024. The story is set in a society where roughly 80 percent of people possess superhuman abilities called Quirks. These powers range from simple physical mutations to highly dangerous elemental or transformation abilities, and their widespread presence has created a professional hero system regulated by government institutions.

The central character, Izuku Midoriya, is born without a Quirk but still dreams of becoming a hero like Japan's greatest champion, All Might. After Midoriya risks his life to protect his childhood rival Katsuki Bakugo from a villain, All Might recognizes his potential and chooses him as the successor to One For All. This inherited Quirk stores power across generations and carries the vestiges of its previous users. Midoriya receives One For All shortly before enrolling at U.A. High School, a prestigious academy that trains future heroes.

At U.A., Midoriya joins Class 1-A, whose students include Bakugo, the dual-powered Shoto Todoroki, gravity-manipulating Ochaco Uraraka, engine-legged Tenya Iida, and frog-like hero Tsuyu Asui. Their homeroom teacher is Shota Aizawa, also known as Eraser Head, whose Quirk can temporarily erase another person's abilities when he maintains eye contact. The students train through combat exercises, rescue operations, work studies, and school events such as the U.A. Sports Festival.

A major threat comes from the League of Villains, initially led by Tomura Shigaraki, whose Decay Quirk disintegrates whatever he touches with all five fingers. The League is supported by All For One, a powerful criminal who can steal, transfer, and combine Quirks. All For One is also the original enemy of One For All and the mentor behind Shigaraki's rise. Their conflict eventually expands into a war involving heroes, villains, civilians, and former U.A. students.

The television anime is produced by Bones and premiered in April 2016. Kenji Nagasaki served as chief director for the early television seasons, while Yosuke Kuroda handled series composition. The series also received theatrical films, including My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, Heroes: Rising, World Heroes' Mission, and You're Next. Across its long-running story, My Hero Academia follows Midoriya's effort to understand heroism beyond strength alone while facing the inherited consequences of All Might and All For One's decades-long rivalry.
