About Phantom Centaur

Phantom Centaur, Creature — centaur spirit, designed by Carl Critchlow first released in May, 2002 in the set Judgment and was printed exactly in 8 different ways.

A deck that focuses on green creatures and wants protection from black spells or creatures would benefit from including Phantom Centaur. While it offers a strong defensive ability with its protection and damage prevention, there are potentially better options like Thrun, the Last Troll or Obstinate Baloth for similar mana cost that provide more resilience and value in certain situations. Phantom Centaur could see play in specific metagames where protection from black is crucial, but overall, its effectiveness may depend on the current state of the game and the opponent's deck composition.

Rules

10/04/04

If this card is going to take damage from a black source, you can choose to apply Protection from Black’s damage prevention ability prior to applying this card’s built-in ability. This means you don’t have to remove a counter.

10/04/04

If unpreventable damage is applied to this card, you still remove a counter even though the prevention fails.

10/04/04

The damage prevention ability works even if it has no counters, as long as some effect keeps its toughness above zero.
