Olga Kurylenko

Olga Kurylenko was born on 14 November 1979 in Berdyansk, then in the Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union. Her mother, Marina Alyabusheva, worked as an art teacher, while her father, Konstantin Kurylenko, left the family when Olga was young. Raised largely by her mother and grandmother, she moved to Moscow at thirteen and was noticed by a modeling scout. She subsequently worked internationally and relocated to Paris at sixteen. Her screen career included French projects before a wider breakthrough in the 2007 action film Hitman, adapted from the video-game series. She played Nika Boronina, a woman held captive by traffickers whom Agent 47 helps free. In 2008, she became a Bond leading woman in Quantum of Solace, opposite Daniel Craig’s James Bond. Her character, Camille Montes, seeks revenge against General Medrano, the Bolivian dictator who murdered her family. The role made Kurylenko the first Ukrainian-born actress to play a principal Bond girl. In 2010, she starred with Russell Crowe in the historical drama The Next Three Days as Lara, whose imprisonment for murder drives her husband, John Brennan, to plan an escape. She later appeared in Terrence Malick’s To the Wonder (2012) and played Julia Rusakova in Joseph Kosinski’s science-fiction film Oblivion (2013), alongside Tom Cruise. In Oblivion, Julia is one of the survivors whose arrival undermines drone-repairman Jack Harper’s understanding of Earth’s war and his own past. Kurylenko reunited with Kosinski for the 2017 firefighter drama Only the Brave, portraying Amanda Marsh, wife of Granite Mountain Hotshot Chris Marsh. That year she also played Maria Veniaminovna in Armando Iannucci’s satirical The Death of Stalin, a concert pianist who becomes entangled with Soviet power struggles. In Marvel’s Black Widow (2021), she portrayed Antonia Dreykov, the scarred daughter of Red Room chief Dreykov and the masked operative Taskmaster. The film reveals that her father had subjected her to neurological control, enabling her to mimic opponents’ fighting styles. Her later credits include the Netflix action thriller Extraction 2 (2023), where she played Mia. Beyond English-language productions, Kurylenko has continued to work in French and European cinema, including the 2021 French thriller Sentinelle. There she plays Klara, a French soldier traumatised after an assignment in Syria, who pursues the men who assaulted her sister. Her career has therefore moved between major franchise filmmaking, historical satire, science fiction, and French-language action, while remaining active in international ensemble projects and independent productions across several national cinemas and languages over two decades.
