Anne Hathaway

Anne Hathaway is an American actress, born in 1982, known for The Princess Diaries, Les Misérables, and winning an Academy Award in 2013.

Anne Hathaway, born November 12, 1982, in Brooklyn, New York, is an American actor whose screen career moved from Disney’s The Princess Diaries to Oscar-winning dramatic work and major studio franchises. She was raised in Millburn, New Jersey, and attended Millburn High School. Her mother, Kate McCauley Hathaway, worked as an actor, and Hathaway has cited watching her mother perform as an early influence. At 16, Hathaway became the first teenager admitted to the Barrow Group theater company. In 1999, she was cast as Megan Green in the Fox television series Get Real, which ran for one season. That job led into her 2001 breakthrough as Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries, directed by Garry Marshall. Hathaway played an awkward San Francisco teenager who discovers that she is heir to the fictional European kingdom of Genovia. The film became a commercial success, and she returned as Mia in the 2004 sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Her early work also included Ella Enchanted, in which she played Ella of Frell, a young woman magically compelled to obey commands, and The Other Side of Heaven, based on missionary John H. Groberg’s memoir. Hathaway later pursued more adult roles, earning attention for Brokeback Mountain in 2005, where she played Lureen Newsome, the wife of Jake Gyllenhaal’s rodeo rider. In 2006 she starred opposite Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada as Andy Sachs, a journalism graduate working for Streep’s demanding fashion-magazine editor, Miranda Priestly. The film’s success made Hathaway a prominent leading actor. She also portrayed Jane Austen in Becoming Jane, appeared in Rachel Getting Married, and received an Academy Award nomination for playing Kym Buchman, a recovering addict returning home for her sister’s wedding. In 2012 Hathaway won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Les Misérables. She played Fantine, the impoverished factory worker who sells her hair, teeth, and body to support her daughter Cosette. Her performance of “I Dreamed a Dream” was central to the film’s reception. The same year, she played Selina Kyle in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, the final installment of Nolan’s Batman trilogy. Later credits include Interstellar, The Intern, Ocean’s 8, Serenity, The Witches, and Armageddon Time. In 2023, she starred in Eileen, adapted from Ottessa Moshfegh’s novel, and in She Came to Me, directed by Rebecca Miller.
