Amy Sherman-Palladino

Amy Sherman-Palladino is an American television writer, producer, and director best known for creating the fast-talking, reference-heavy series Gilmore Girls and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Born in Los Angeles, California, she grew up in the San Fernando Valley. Her father, Don Sherman, was a comedian, and her mother, Maybin Hewes, was a dancer. Sherman-Palladino initially studied ballet seriously, an influence visible in the musical staging, rhythmic dialogue, and dance sequences that later became notable features of her work. She began writing for television on the sitcom Roseanne, where she worked during the 1990s. Her scripts attracted attention for their distinctive speed and pop-culture density. In 2000, The WB premiered Gilmore Girls, created by Sherman-Palladino. The drama-comedy centered on Lorelai Gilmore, a single mother played by Lauren Graham, and her academically ambitious daughter Rory, played by Alexis Bledel, in the fictional Connecticut town of Stars Hollow. The program followed their close relationship, Lorelai’s difficult history with her wealthy parents Emily and Richard Gilmore, and Rory’s education at Chilton and Yale. Sherman-Palladino served as executive producer and wrote or co-wrote many Gilmore Girls episodes with her husband and longtime collaborator, Daniel Palladino. She left the series before its seventh and final original season after contract negotiations with Warner Bros. Television did not result in a new agreement. In 2016, she returned to the Gilmore Girls world for Netflix’s four-part revival, Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life. Each installment represented a season, and the final episode ended with Rory telling Lorelai that she was pregnant. Her next major success was The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2017. Set primarily in late-1950s and early-1960s New York, the series follows Miriam “Midge” Maisel, played by Rachel Brosnahan, as she begins performing stand-up comedy after her husband Joel leaves her. Alex Borstein played Midge’s manager, Susie Myerson, while Tony Shalhoub and Marin Hinkle portrayed Midge’s parents, Abe and Rose Weissman. The show incorporated changing social expectations, the comedy-club circuit, and Midge’s evolving professional ambitions. For The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Sherman-Palladino became the first woman to win Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series in the same year, 2018. Her work is associated with elaborate production design, carefully choreographed camera movement, period detail, and dialogue delivered at exceptional speed.
