Szadek, Lord of Secrets would be a strong addition to a Dimir control or mill deck in Magic: The Gathering, where the focus is on disrupting the opponent's strategy and milling their deck. While Szadek's ability to grow in power and mill cards is powerful, there are more efficient and impactful cards for competitive play, such as Jace, the Mind Sculptor or Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver, which provide better utility and board presence. However, for a casual or themed deck centered around milling, Szadek could definitely see play for its unique and flavorful abilities.

If another effect would prevent Szadek’s combat damage from being dealt to the defending player or replace it with something else, that player chooses which effect applies first. For example, the player can choose to first have Mending Hands prevent 4 of the damage and then apply Szadek’s ability so that it gets only one counter.
