Smother, Instant, designed by Carl Critchlow first released in Jun, 2002 in the set Magic Online Promos and was printed exactly in 8 different ways.
This card, Smother, would be beneficial in a deck that focuses on early-game aggression and disruption, such as a Black-based aggro or tempo deck. While Smother is effective at removing smaller threats efficiently, there are other cards like Fatal Push or Dismember that offer more versatility and can target larger creatures as well. However, Smother could still see play in certain metagames where there are many low-cost creatures that need to be dealt with swiftly.

A creature’s converted mana cost is determined solely by the mana symbols printed in its upper right corner (unless that creature is copying something else; see below). If its mana cost includes , X is considered to be 0. If it has no mana symbols in its upper right corner (because it’s an animated land, for example), its converted mana cost is 0. Ignore any alternative costs or additional costs (such as kicker) paid when the creature was cast.

If a creature is copying something else, its converted mana cost is the converted mana cost of whatever it’s copying.
