About Nicol Bolas, the Deceiver

Nicol Bolas, the Deceiver, Legendary planeswalker — bolas, designed by Svetlin Velinov first released in Jul, 2017 in the set Hour of Devastation.

A deck that focuses on control and disruption would benefit from including Nicol Bolas, the Deceiver, as it offers a mix of life loss, removal, and card advantage. While Nicol Bolas is a powerful card, there are other options that may be more efficient or fit better in certain strategies, such as Nicol Bolas, Dragon-God, which offers more versatility and immediate impact. Whether Nicol Bolas, the Deceiver should see play depends on the specific deck and meta, but its unique abilities make it a strong contender in the right build.

Rules

07/14/17

If the target of Nicol Bolas’s second ability becomes illegal, the ability doesn’t resolve and you won’t draw a card. If that target is legal but can’t be destroyed, most likely because it has indestructible, you still draw a card.

07/14/17

While resolving Nicol Bolas’s first ability, your opponent chooses a card to be discarded without revealing it, chooses a nonland permanent to be sacrificed, or chooses to do neither. Then that player discards that card, sacrifices that permanent, or loses 3 life. Your opponent can always choose to lose 3 life, even if they have cards to discard or nonland permanents to sacrifice.
