About Neurok Transmuter

Neurok Transmuter, Creature — human wizard, designed by Mark Zug first released in May, 2020 in the set Darksteel. It's a key card in 1 combos.

The Neurok Transmuter would be particularly beneficial in a control or tempo deck that seeks to manipulate the board state and disrupt opponents' strategies. Its ability to temporarily change creature types can enable synergies with cards that interact with artifacts or creatures, such as those that benefit from sacrificing artifacts or those that trigger effects based on creature types. However, there may be better options depending on the specific strategy; for instance, cards like Padeem, Consul of Innovation provide consistent card advantage and protection for your artifacts. Overall, the Neurok Transmuter can see play in niche builds, especially in formats where creature type manipulation is more impactful, but its effectiveness may be overshadowed by more powerful or versatile cards.

Neurok Transmuter’s second ability interacts strangely with March of the Machines from the Mirrodin set. If an artifact is an artifact creature only because March of the Machines is on the battlefield and you then activate Neurok Transmuter’s second ability on that artifact creature, the result is a permanent with no types whatsoever. Neurok Transmuter’s ability removes the type “artifact.” March of the Machines depends on knowing what is and isn’t an artifact. The permanent won’t be an artifact when March of the Machine’s effect is applied and therefore it won’t be turned into a creature.

Neurok Transmuter’s second ability removes the type “artifact” — and any artifact subtypes — from the artifact creature it targets. It doesn’t remove any other types or any subtypes of other types, and it doesn’t remove supertypes. If the artifact was legendary, it’s still legendary, and the “Legend rule” applies normally.
