The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show

The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show is a 1971 American animated television series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions for CBS. It brings two child characters from The Flintstones into adolescence: Pebbles Flintstone, daughter of Fred and Wilma, and Bamm-Bamm Rubble, the exceptionally strong adopted son of Barney and Betty. Rather than retelling Stone Age family stories centered on their parents, the program follows the pair as teenagers in Bedrock. The characters attend Bedrock High School and spend much of their time with fellow students, giving the prehistoric setting a distinctly youth-oriented, early-1970s situation-comedy focus. Its episodes use familiar Flintstones-style anachronisms, translating contemporary teenage concerns into a world of stone, dinosaurs, and puns. Pebbles is voiced by Sally Struthers, while Jay North supplies Bamm-Bamm’s voice. Struthers had become widely known for playing Gloria Stivic on All in the Family; North was already associated with television’s Dennis the Menace. The supporting teenage group includes Penny, voiced by Mitzi McCall; Wiggy, voiced by Gay Hartwig; Moonrock, voiced by Carl Esser; and Fabian, voiced by Frank Welker. Alan Reed returned as Fred Flintstone and Mel Blanc returned as Barney Rubble, preserving the principal parental voices from the original franchise. Those connections make the series a continuation, not merely a similarly styled cartoon. CBS broadcast the program on Saturday mornings from September 11, 1971, to January 1, 1972. Its original run consists of sixteen episodes, each built around the characters’ school, social, or dating lives rather than the domestic routines that dominated The Flintstones. Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm are portrayed as a couple, but their friends’ rivalries, parties, school activities, and parental restrictions repeatedly drive the stories. This changed their function within the franchise: in The Flintstones they had been children, whereas this series made them the leads and let Fred, Wilma, Barney, and Betty serve chiefly as older-generation figures. Although it lasted only one season, The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show is notable for making its title characters the center of a separate Flintstones television production. Hanna-Barbera’s shift from preschool-aged children to high-school teenagers also allowed new vocal performers to define Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm while the long-established voices of their fathers anchored the continuity. The series’ short CBS run, specific teenage ensemble, and setting at Bedrock High distinguish it from the original Flintstones program and from later franchise revivals. Its premise therefore documents an unusual early chapter in the screen history of Bedrock’s next generation and its teenage residents.
