Pokémon Horizons: The Series premiered in Japan on April 14, 2023, introducing Liko and Roy as its new central protagonists.

Liko attends Indigo Academy in the Paldea region, while Roy comes from Kanto and carries a mysterious Ancient Poké Ball.

Liko's partner is Sprigatito, and Roy's partner is Fuecoco, giving the story two young trainers with contrasting beginnings and goals.

Their lives change after Liko receives a pendant connected to Lucius, an ancient adventurer whose Pokémon and journeys drive mystery.

Roy's Ancient Poké Ball releases a black Rayquaza, whose appearance links his adventure to the same unresolved legend surrounding Lucius.

The protagonists join the Rising Volt Tacklers, a group using the airship Brave Olivine to investigate Pokémon and protect Liko.

Their leader, Friede, battles beside Captain Pikachu, a partner Pokémon that wears a cap and commands attention within the crew.

The Explorers pursue Liko's pendant and the ancient Pokémon, making Amethio an early rival while Spinel uses calculated psychological tactics.

Amethio's Ceruledge gives his confrontations a recognizable edge, whereas Spinel's Umbreon and technological surveillance make him especially methodical and dangerous.

The series reveals that six Pokémon are associated with Lucius, with Terapagos central to the continuing mystery surrounding his quest.

Horizons is structured through story arcs rather than Ash's traditional Gym challenge, shifting attention toward exploration, relationships, and historical discovery.

Its first major storyline, the Liko and Roy's Departure arc, establishes the pendant, Rayquaza, the Explorers, and the airship crew.

The English title keeps the word Horizons, reflecting a worldwide journey, while Japanese broadcasts identify the series as Pocket Monsters.

Its opening theme, “Dokimeki Diary,” was performed by asmi featuring Chinozo, giving the launch a specifically contemporary musical identity for audiences.

The English dub uses localized opening material, preserving the series' emphasis on beginnings, discovery, and a journey beyond familiar routes.

Liko and Roy's partnership also changes the franchise's viewpoint: neither begins as an established champion, and both learn through setbacks.

By centering two protagonists and an ensemble crew, Horizons makes the unresolved past of Lucius drive present-day choices and conflicts.
