Sophia Lillis

Sophia Lillis is an American actor born on February 13, 2002, in Brooklyn, New York. Her early screen work included a role as the younger version of Camille Preaker in HBO’s 2018 miniseries Sharp Objects, adapted from Gillian Flynn’s novel. Amy Adams played adult Camille, while Lillis appeared in flashbacks set during the character’s troubled childhood in Wind Gap, Missouri.

Lillis became widely known for playing Beverly Marsh in Andy Muschietti’s 2017 film It, based on Stephen King’s novel. Beverly is the only girl in the Losers Club, a group of children confronting Pennywise, the shapeshifting entity haunting Derry. Lillis returned as young Beverly in It Chapter Two (2019), whose principal present-day story follows the adult Losers Club. Jessica Chastain played Beverly as an adult in that sequel.

In 2019, she played Nancy Drew in Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase, a film directed by Katt Shea. The story places Nancy and her friends Bess Marvin and George Fayne at the centre of an investigation involving a supposedly haunted mansion and the sisters who live there.

She took the title role in Oz Perkins’s Gretel & Hansel (2020), a horror retelling of the Brothers Grimm tale. This version follows Gretel as she and her younger brother enter a forest after leaving home; Alice Krige portrays Holda, the woman they encounter.

Lillis starred as Sydney Novak in Netflix’s 2020 series I Am Not Okay with This. Adapted from Charles Forsman’s graphic novel, the show follows Sydney’s grief, anger, adolescence, and emerging telekinetic power. She appeared alongside Wyatt Oleff as Stanley Barber and Sofia Bryant as Dina. Netflix cancelled the series after one season.

In 2023, Lillis played Doric, a tiefling druid, in Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves. Doric joins Edgin Darvis and his companions against Forge Fitzwilliam and the Red Wizard Sofina; her druid abilities include changing into several animals. The ensemble film was directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein.

She also appeared in Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City (2023) as Shelly in the film’s ensemble. In 2024, she played Ellie in Caddo Lake, a mystery thriller directed by Celine Held and Logan George. The film links Ellie and Paris through the disappearance of a young girl and the lake’s time-bending passages. Her other film credits include Uncle Frank, released by Amazon in 2020, and The Adults, a 2023 film directed by Dustin Guy Defa, also with Michael Cera.
