Orlando Jonathan Blanchard Bloom was born on January 13, 1977, in Canterbury, Kent, England. He became internationally known for playing Legolas in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy, adapted from J. R. R. Tolkien’s novels. Bloom portrayed the Elven archer in The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), and The Return of the King (2003). The role required extensive physical training and archery work, and made him a major screen actor.
Before that breakthrough, Bloom appeared briefly as a rent boy in Wilde (1997), directed by Brian Gilbert, and had a small part in the television series Midsomer Murders. He trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, graduating in 1999. Shortly afterward, he was cast as Will Turner in Gore Verbinski’s Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003). He returned for Dead Man’s Chest (2006) and At World’s End (2007), opposite Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow and Keira Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann.
Bloom’s other notable early films included Troy (2004), in which he played Paris alongside Brad Pitt and Eric Bana, and Kingdom of Heaven (2005), directed by Ridley Scott, where he portrayed Balian of Ibelin. He later played a version of himself in the 2013 film The Bling Ring, and appeared in the romantic drama Main Street (2010). He returned as Legolas in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Desolation of Smaug (2013), and The Battle of the Five Armies (2014).
In television, Bloom starred as Rycroft Philostrate, known as Philo, in Amazon’s fantasy series Carnival Row (2019–2023). The show was set in a city where humans and mythical refugees lived under political tension. His character was a detective investigating murders while concealing his own fae heritage.
Beyond acting, Bloom has worked as a producer and supported UNICEF. He became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 2009, with work focused partly on children’s issues. He has also spoken publicly about environmental concerns and humanitarian causes. In 2013, he made his Broadway debut in Romeo and Juliet, playing Romeo opposite Condola Rashad as Juliet. The production ran at the Richard Rodgers Theatre and was directed by David Leveaux. Bloom has remained associated with physically demanding roles, but his film choices have ranged from historical dramas to fantasy and television. His performances as Legolas, Will Turner, and Philo define distinct stages of his career.
