Edit reference

James Potter is a fictional character in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series and the father of Harry Potter. He was born on 27 March 1960 to Fleamont and Euphemia Potter, an affluent wizarding couple whose family fortune came partly from Fleamont’s invention of magical hair products. James attended Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he was sorted into Gryffindor. His closest school friends were Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew. Together, they became known as the Marauders, although James was not initially aware that Lupin was a werewolf. Their secret shaped several dangerous years at school and beyond.

James and Sirius were talented, confident, and frequently arrogant students. They discovered Lupin’s condition and secretly learned to become Animagi, allowing them to accompany him during full moons without being harmed. James transformed into a stag, Sirius into a large black dog, and Pettigrew into a rat; these forms inspired the nicknames Prongs, Padfoot, and Wormtail. The four created the Marauder’s Map, a magical document that displays people moving throughout Hogwarts. James’s history includes harassment of Severus Snape, especially alongside Sirius. Memories shown in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix present James as popular, but cruel and immature.

After leaving Hogwarts, James joined the Order of the Phoenix, opposing Lord Voldemort during the First Wizarding War. He married Lily Evans, a Muggle-born witch and his former schoolmate, and they had one child, Harry. According to Albus Dumbledore’s account, Voldemort considered the prophecy concerning a boy born at the end of July and marked Harry as his intended enemy. The Potters went into hiding under the Fidelius Charm at Godric’s Hollow. Peter Pettigrew served as their Secret-Keeper but betrayed them to Voldemort. James and Lily had rejected Voldemort’s demand that they join him, making their family a direct target.

On 31 October 1981, Voldemort entered the Potter home. James told Lily to take Harry and run while he tried to delay the intruder, but he had no wand with him and was killed almost immediately. Lily’s subsequent sacrifice caused Voldemort’s killing curse to rebound when he attacked Harry, leaving the infant with his lightning-shaped scar and destroying Voldemort’s body. James therefore died at twenty-one, before Harry could remember him. He appears through echoes and memories, including Priori Incantatem during the duel in the Little Hangleton graveyard. His legacy remains inseparable from Harry’s grief, Lily’s protection, and the Marauders’ history.
