About Portal Mage

Portal Mage, Creature — human wizard, designed by Yongjae Choi first released in Aug, 2017 in the set Commander 2017 and was printed exactly in 4 different ways.

A deck focused on controlling combat and manipulating opponents' attacks would benefit from including Portal Mage, as it provides a surprise element and can disrupt opponents' strategies. While there may be more powerful cards with similar effects, Portal Mage's Flash ability and unique targeting flexibility make it a viable option in certain decks, especially those looking to outmaneuver opponents during combat. Its inclusion in a deck would depend on the specific strategy and synergy with other cards, but it could definitely see play in the right context.

Rules

08/25/17

If an ability targets something controlled by the “defending player” of an attacking creature and the defending player for that creature changes before that ability resolves, the ability won’t resolve because its target has become illegal.

08/25/17

Reselecting which player or planeswalker a creature is attacking doesn’t cause “whenever this creature attacks” abilities to trigger. Notably, the Curses in this set (such as Curse of Vitality) won’t trigger while Portal Mage’s ability is resolving.

08/25/17

You may cast Portal Mage outside of a declare attackers step. If Portal Mage enters the battlefield outside of a declare attackers step, its ability simply doesn’t trigger.
