Battlefield Thaumaturge, Creature — human wizard, designed by Mike Sass first released in May, 2014 in the set Journey into Nyx.
This card would be beneficial in a spell-heavy deck that focuses on targeting multiple creatures with instant and sorcery spells, allowing for cost reduction and potential protection with hexproof. While Battlefield Thaumaturge offers a unique ability, there are potentially better cards like Goblin Electromancer or Baral, Chief of Compliance that provide similar cost reduction effects and additional benefits, making them more popular choices in competitive play. However, for a more casual or thematic deck centered around spell-slinging and creature targeting, Battlefield Thaumaturge could definitely see play and add an interesting dynamic to the gameplay.

Battlefield Thaumaturge’s first ability doesn’t change that spell’s mana cost or converted mana cost. It changes only the amount you actually pay (the “total cost” of the spell).
04/26/14
Heroic abilities will resolve before the spell that caused them to trigger.
04/26/14
Heroic abilities won’t trigger when a copy of a spell is created on the stack or when a spell’s targets are changed to include a creature with a heroic ability.
04/26/14
The cost reduction created by Battlefield Thaumaturge’s first ability can reduce only the generic portion of the spell’s total cost. Colored mana requirements aren’t affected.
