The Rehearsal

The Rehearsal is an HBO comedy-docuseries created, written, directed, and hosted by Nathan Fielder. Its premise is unusually literal: Fielder offers ordinary people elaborate chances to rehearse difficult conversations or future decisions before facing them in real life. HBO premiered the first season on July 15, 2022. Six episodes followed, with the finale airing August 19, 2022. HBO renewed the series for a second season in 2022; its six-episode second season premiered April 20, 2025. The opening episode introduces Kor Skeete, a Brooklyn man who has lied for years about possessing a master’s degree. To prepare him to confess to trivia teammate Tricia, Fielder builds a painstaking replica of the bar where the confession is expected to occur. Actors play Kor and Tricia in repeated practice sessions, while Fielder supplies research, scripted contingencies, and even details drawn from Kor’s life. That combination of meticulous construction and unpredictable human behavior establishes the program’s central tension: the rehearsals are designed to reduce uncertainty, yet they produce new complications of their own. Season one’s main continuing project begins when Angela, a woman who says she wants to experience raising a child before becoming a parent, agrees to inhabit a simulated family. A house in rural Oregon becomes the setting, and child actors rotate through ages to imitate a baby’s rapid development. Angela and Fielder are assigned parenting roles, but the experiment expands beyond its original plan. Fielder becomes increasingly involved, adopts the role of a father to a boy named Adam, and later creates further rehearsals around his own responses to the simulation. The series repeatedly shows its machinery rather than hiding it. Fielder visits actors’ homes, stages rehearsals inside rehearsals, and reconstructs locations with exacting visual detail. In “The Fielder Method,” he trains an actor playing himself to observe and copy his mannerisms; the episode then complicates who is performing and who is supposedly being candid. “Pretend Daddy” follows Fielder’s attempt to address Adam’s distress after the child actor’s scheduled departure, while “The Claim” returns to Kor and questions what a successful rehearsal has actually changed. Fielder had previously co-created and starred in Comedy Central’s Nathan for You, where he presented bizarre business-improvement schemes to real owners. The Rehearsal carries forward his interest in planning and performance, but its subjects are personal stakes: friendship, parenthood, religious belief, and the ethical limits of turning preparation into an all-consuming production for everyone involved, including Fielder himself.
