Thomas Newman

Thomas Newman is an American composer whose film scores have shaped dramas, thrillers, animated features, and documentaries since the 1980s. Born in Los Angeles on October 20, 1955, he belongs to a major Hollywood music family: his father was composer Alfred Newman, his mother was Martha Montgomery, and his brother David Newman also became a film composer. His cousins include composers Randy Newman and Maria Newman. He studied at the University of Southern California and Yale University, where he earned a master’s degree in composition. This lineage did not dictate his sound: Newman developed a recognizably spare, textural, and rhythmically inventive style, often using piano, percussion, electronic color, and unusually placed acoustic instruments. His first feature-film score was for Reckless (1984), directed by James Foley. He became especially associated with director Sam Mendes after scoring American Beauty (1999), Road to Perdition (2002), Jarhead (2005), Revolutionary Road (2008), Skyfall (2012), Spectre (2015), and 1917 (2019). American Beauty earned him an Academy Award nomination and established a score built around haunting piano figures, marimba, and shimmering orchestral details. For 1917, his music supported Mendes’s First World War narrative, while the film’s celebrated apparent single-take design intensified its real-time momentum. Newman has repeatedly favored atmosphere over traditional symphonic grandiosity, though he can write broad orchestral material when a story demands it. His collaborations with Pixar produced some of his most widely heard work: Finding Nemo (2003), WALL-E (2008), and Finding Dory (2016). Finding Nemo brought him an Oscar nomination, and WALL-E earned another for its score. He also scored The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Little Women (1994), The Green Mile (1999), Erin Brockovich (2000), Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004), The Help (2011), Saving Mr. Banks (2013), Bridge of Spies (2015), and the James Bond films Skyfall and Spectre. His scores often identify character and setting through small repeating cells rather than overt themes. Newman has received fifteen Academy Award nominations, including nominations for original score and original song; yet he has not won an Oscar. His score nominations include The Shawshank Redemption, Little Women, American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Finding Nemo, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, WALL-E, Skyfall, Saving Mr. Banks, Bridge of Spies, and 1917. In 2020, he won the BAFTA Award for Best Original Music for 1917. His television work includes the theme music for Six Feet Under, the HBO drama created by Alan Ball.
