Donald Trump

Donald John Trump was born on June 14, 1946, in Queens, New York City, the fourth of five children of Fred Trump, a real-estate developer, and Mary Anne MacLeod Trump. He attended the New York Military Academy, studied for two years at Fordham University, then transferred to the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School, earning a bachelor's degree in economics in 1968. After graduating, he joined his father's company, Trump Management, which owned and operated apartments in New York City's outer boroughs. He became the company's president in 1971, moved its focus toward Manhattan, and renamed it The Trump Organization in 1973 as its public brand. In Manhattan, Trump developed the Grand Hyatt hotel with the Hyatt Corporation, opening it in 1980 after renovation of the former Commodore Hotel near Grand Central Terminal. Trump Tower, a 58-story mixed-use skyscraper on Fifth Avenue, opened in 1983. His later branded properties included casinos in Atlantic City, hotels, golf courses, and residential developments. The Plaza Hotel was acquired by a Trump-led partnership in 1988 and sold in 1995. Financial distress led Trump casino businesses to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, notably the Taj Mahal in 1991, Trump Plaza in 1992, and Trump Hotels and Casino Resorts later in 2004. Trump gained national visibility through television. He produced and hosted NBC's reality competition series The Apprentice from 2004 to 2015, beginning with a format in which contestants competed for a job in his organization. Its catchphrase, "You're fired," became closely associated with him. He also made appearances in wrestling programming and was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame celebrity wing in 2013. Before holding office, he wrote or co-wrote books including The Art of the Deal, published in 1987 with journalist Tony Schwartz. In 2015, he announced his candidacy for president at Trump Tower and campaigned as a Republican. He won the 2016 presidential election against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, receiving 304 electoral votes to Clinton's 227, while losing nationwide popular vote. He served as 45th president of the U.S. from January 20, 2017, to January 20, 2021. He signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, appointed three Supreme Court justices, and oversaw Operation Warp Speed. He was impeached twice by House of Representatives and acquitted twice by Senate. In 2024, he won the Republican presidential nomination and defeated Democratic nominee Kamala Harris in general election, returning to the presidency as 47th president of the United States.
