The Batman Part II is the announced sequel to Matt Reeves's 2022 film The Batman, which starred Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne and became a separate continuity from earlier live-action Batman movies. Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios announced the project in January 2023, during the presentation that also introduced James Gunn and Peter Safran's plans for DC's connected film universe.
Reeves is returning to direct and co-write the screenplay with Mattson Tomlin. Pattinson is expected to reprise Batman, although the studio has not publicly announced a complete returning cast. The sequel's scheduled theatrical release date is October 2, 2026. That date places the film after the original's October 2022 release and gives Reeves more time to develop his version of Gotham City.
No official synopsis has established the sequel's villain, central conflict, setting details, or relationship between Bruce and Selina Kyle. Therefore, claims that specific characters such as the Joker, Hush, or Mr. Freeze will appear remain unconfirmed. Reeves has described his Batman films as a distinct saga, rather than a continuation of Christopher Nolan's trilogy or the DC Extended Universe.
The first film established this continuity's Gotham through a serial-killer investigation: Batman pursued the Riddler, played by Paul Dano, while Jeffrey Wright played Detective James Gordon, Zoë Kravitz played Selina Kyle, and Colin Farrell played Oswald Cobblepot, later known as the Penguin. Its ending left Gotham damaged by catastrophic flooding, and the Penguin remained positioned for a criminal role. However, those unresolved elements are context from The Batman, not confirmed plot information for Part II.
The title also distinguishes the film from The Penguin, an HBO limited series centered on Farrell's Cobblepot. That series was developed as a spin-off of Reeves's Batman continuity, but it is not the sequel itself. Reeves serves as an executive producer on the Gotham projects, while The Batman Part II remains a feature film planned for cinemas.
The project's confirmed creative foundation is consequently narrow: Reeves returns as director, Tomlin is attached as co-writer, and Pattinson is associated with the lead role. No trailer, production footage, finalized synopsis, villain announcement, or full cast list had been officially released in the publicly confirmed details available through mid-2024. Accordingly, the most accurate description is not that Part II will follow a particular comic-book storyline, but that it is Reeves's planned second chapter in a Batman film series led by Pattinson and scheduled for October 2, 2026.
