Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is an American single-camera police sitcom created by Dan Goor and Michael Schur. It premiered on Fox on September 17, 2013, and initially follows Detective Jake Peralta, a gifted but immature officer working at the fictional 99th Precinct in Brooklyn. Andy Samberg plays Jake, whose competitive streak is sharpened when Captain Raymond Holt, portrayed by Andre Braugher, takes command. Holt’s deadpan manner becomes a comic counterweight to Jake’s impulsiveness, while their mentor-and-surrogate-family relationship drives the series. The original precinct ensemble includes Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero), Jake’s ambitious rival and wife; Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz), a private, intimidating detective; Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio), Jake’s intensely loyal partner; Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews), the muscular sergeant and father of twin daughters; and Gina Linetti (Chelsea Peretti), the civilian administrator known for eccentric pronouncements. Later major characters include Holt’s husband, classics professor Kevin Cozner (Marc Evan Jackson), and recurring criminal Doug Judy, the “Pontiac Bandit,” played by Craig Robinson. Fox cancelled the show after its fifth season in May 2018. NBC picked it up the following day for a sixth season, airing three seasons. Its eighth and final season premiered on August 12, 2021, and concluded on September 16, 2021. The series ran for 153 episodes across eight seasons. The annual Halloween Heist episodes turn the precinct into an escalating contest for a prize, with alliances and betrayals often overturning the expected winner. Other continuing stories include Jake and Amy’s romance, marriage, and parenthood; Rosa’s coming out as bisexual in season five; and Holt’s repeated efforts to advance within the NYPD. The show also addressed policing and workplace discrimination. “Moo Moo” centers on Terry being stopped by a white police officer while searching for one of his daughters’ toys. “He Said, She Said” follows Amy assisting a woman reporting sexual assault at work. Before season eight, the producers said they would rethink stories in response to the murder of George Floyd and debates over police conduct; the final season includes Rosa leaving the force to work as a private investigator focused on police-misconduct cases. The series received awards recognition. Andy Samberg won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy in 2014, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine won that year’s Golden Globe for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy. Andre Braugher earned multiple Primetime Emmy Award nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for playing Holt.
