Yosuke Kuroda

Yōsuke Kuroda is a Japanese screenwriter and novelist, born on 29 March 1968 in Mie Prefecture. His credits reach across original television projects, manga adaptations, and long-running franchises, but his work is identifiable through concrete series rather than a single genre. He wrote for the 1998 anime adaptation of Yasuhiro Nightow’s Trigun, a western-influenced science-fiction story about the pacifist gunslinger Vash the Stampede. He was also a writer on Hellsing Ultimate, the OVA adaptation of Kouta Hirano’s vampire manga, whose episodes were released over many years.

Kuroda became especially prominent through the original romantic science-fiction television series Please Teacher! (Onegai Teacher), broadcast in 2002, and its 2003 follow-up Please Twins! (Onegai Twins). Both premises place their young characters in unusual domestic arrangements, but they are distinct productions: Please Teacher! centres on high-school student Kei Kusanagi and his alien teacher Mizuho Kazami, while Please Twins! follows Maiku Kamishiro, Miina Miyafuji, and Karen Onodera as they try to resolve a childhood photograph’s mystery. Kuroda handled series composition and scripts for these titles, working with director Yasunori Ide.

In 2007, Kuroda served as series composer for Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Sunrise’s televised Gundam installment directed by Seiji Mizushima. The story begins in AD 2307, when the private armed organization Celestial Being uses Gundams to intervene militarily against war; its central pilot is Setsuna F. Seiei. Kuroda’s involvement continued through the second television season and the 2010 film Mobile Suit Gundam 00 the Movie: A Wakening of the Trailblazer. This was not merely a robot-show assignment: Gundam 00 frames its conflicts around energy politics, international blocs, and Celestial Being’s declared effort to eradicate armed conflict.

Kuroda is also the series composer for My Hero Academia, the television adaptation of Kōhei Horikoshi’s manga. Set in a society where superpowers called Quirks are widespread, it follows Izuku Midoriya after he inherits One For All from the hero All Might. The adaptation began in 2016, and Kuroda’s writing role has extended across its successive seasons. Other notable screenwriting credits include Jormungand, based on Keitarō Takahashi’s manga about arms dealer Koko Hekmatyar; Drifters, from Kouta Hirano’s manga; and Goblin Slayer, adapted from Kumo Kagyu’s light novels. These credits document a career moving between school hero drama, military science fiction, and darker action fantasy. They also show his sustained presence in productions whose source materials, settings, and audiences differ sharply from one another over more than two professional decades.
