Nathan Fielder

Nathan Fielder is a Canadian comedian, writer, actor, director, and producer known for constructing elaborate, deadpan experiments that blur comedy, performance, and reality. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, on May 12, 1983, he studied commerce at the University of Victoria, graduating in 2005, and later completed a comedy-writing program at Humber College in Toronto.

Fielder’s early television work included writing for Canadian Idol in 2006. He also appeared in the CBC series This Hour Has 22 Minutes and created the 2010 web series Nathan Fielder: The Web Series for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. In 2011, he co-created and starred in Jon Benjamin Has a Van, a Comedy Central series with H. Jon Benjamin. The show used fake local-news segments and staged public situations, anticipating many techniques Fielder would later develop further.

He became widely recognized through Nathan for You, which aired on Comedy Central from 2013 to 2017. In the series, Fielder played an exaggerated version of himself: an awkward business-school graduate offering unconventional marketing advice to struggling real businesses. Episodes included helping a petting zoo attract attention by promoting a “pig saves goat” video, designing a controversial independent-coffee-shop parody called Dumb Starbucks, and creating the “Claw of Shame,” a giant arcade claw game in which participants had to expose embarrassing secrets to win prizes. Although the premises were comic, the program depended on real business owners and unsuspecting members of the public.

In 2022, Fielder returned to television with HBO’s The Rehearsal, which he created, directed, wrote, and starred in. The series follows him as he helps participants rehearse difficult conversations or major life decisions through painstaking recreations of homes, businesses, and social situations. Its first episode centers on a man preparing to confess a long-hidden lie to a trivia teammate; later episodes expand into an extended simulation of raising a child. The series increasingly examines Fielder’s own role as a producer manipulating reality.

Fielder co-created, wrote, directed, and starred in the Showtime series The Curse with Benny Safdie. Premiering in 2023, it features Fielder and Emma Stone as Asher and Whitney Siegel, a married couple making a home-improvement television show in Española, New Mexico, while pursuing environmentally branded housing projects and facing accusations of exploitation. Fielder also served as an executive producer on HBO’s How To with John Wilson.

Across his work, Fielder has used meticulously planned scenarios to explore commerce, authenticity, embarrassment, television production, and the uncertain boundary between performance and ordinary life.
