Marcello Novaes

Marcello Novaes is a Brazilian actor whose television career became closely associated with TV Globo's telenovelas. Born in Rio de Janeiro on August 13, 1962, he began acting professionally in the 1980s and appeared in Vale Tudo in 1988, playing André. That production, written by Gilberto Braga, Aguinaldo Silva, and Leonor Bassères, is remembered as a landmark of Brazilian television, and it placed Novaes near the center of Globo's dominant serial drama tradition.

His most recognizable romantic-lead breakthrough arrived in Quatro por Quatro (1994), Carlos Lombardi's comedy, in which he played the mechanic Raí. The pairing of Raí with Babalu, portrayed by Letícia Spiller, became one of the novela's defining relationships. Novaes and Spiller also married in 1995 and had a son, Pedro; their marriage ended in 2000. Novaes has another son, Diogo, from an earlier relationship. His work with Lombardi continued in Uga Uga (2000), where he played Beterraba, adding broad comedy to a story built around mistaken identities and jungle-adventure parody.

He later took prominent supporting parts across contrasting genres. In O Clone (2001), Glória Perez's drama connecting Brazil and Morocco, he portrayed Alexandre “Xande” Cordeiro, a working-class man involved with the wealthy Mel. In Walcyr Carrasco's period confection Chocolate com Pimenta (2003), he was the farmer Timóteo Mariano. He returned to a rural setting in América (2005) as Geninho and played Sandro in Sete Pecados (2007). These roles demonstrated how frequently Globo cast him in comic, romantic, and emotionally troubled parts rather than confining him to a single screen persona.

Novaes reached another career peak as Max in Avenida Brasil (2012), created by João Emanuel Carneiro. Max is the lover and accomplice of Carminha, Adriana Esteves's central villain, and participates in the scheme that dispossesses young Rita before the narrative jumps forward. His cowardice, greed, resentment, and increasingly desperate maneuvers made him integral to the revenge plot. The novela became an international success and its final chapter generated exceptional attention in Brazil. Max's murder formed one of its late mysteries, with the revelation of Lucinda's responsibility helping close the interconnected history of the landfill community.

Beyond soap operas, Novaes has appeared in film and stage work, while television remains the foundation of his profile. Later Globo credits include Em Família, Sol Nascente, O Sétimo Guardião, and the 2019 season of Malhação, titled Toda Forma de Amar. Together, these productions document a career spanning more than three decades.
